Akira Aizawa ( Japanese 相 澤 晃 Aizawa Akira ; July 18, 1997 in Sukagawa ) is a Japanese long-distance runner .

Career

Aizawa attended Gakuho Ishikawa High School in Ishikawa , Fukushima Prefecture . In his last school year 2015, he stayed over 5000 meters in 13: 54.75 minutes under 14 minutes.

After graduating from high school, Aizawa began to study economics at Tōyō University and, in his four years there, took part in the popular Ekiden relay race for the university team from 2016 . It was used a total of three times at the prestigious Hakone Ekiden , with Toyo University taking 2nd and 3rd place on the podium at the 2018 and 2019 events. In 2020 he only came in 10th with his university, but on the 23.1 kilometer long second stage he improved the record set by Kenyan Mekubo Mogusu by 7 seconds to 1:05:57 h. In 2018 he had already achieved the third-best individual time of the day on this stage with 1:07:18 h, in between he also set a course record on the fourth stage in 2019.

Aside from the national Ekiden races, Aizawa gained his first international experience at the Junior Asian Championships 2016 in Ho Chi Minh City with a second place over 5000 meters behind his compatriot Takato Suzuki . In November of the same year he made his debut at the Ageo half marathon in fifth place in 1:02:05 h over the half marathon distance . In the following year he improved over 5000 meters to 13: 48.73 min and ran over 10,000 meters 28: 44.19 min, but missed in the half marathon both in February at the Kagawa Marugame half marathon in 1:02:59 min (31st place) ) as well as his debut time in the following month at the national university championships in 1:03:33 h (14th place). In 2018, he achieved further increases over the two long-distance railways with 13: 40.98 min and 28: 17.81 min, and at the national 10,000 meter championships he finished 8th.

In March 2019, Aizawa won the Japanese University Half Marathon Championships with a best time of 1:01:45 h. A month later he also achieved the best time over 5000 meters in 13: 34.94 minutes and in May this time he finished fourth in the Japanese championships over 10,000 meters. In the main competition at the end of June he finished fifth over 5000 meters. In mid-July his second international assignment took place, at the Universiade in Naples he won the half marathon ahead of his compatriots Taisei Nakamura and Tatsuhiko Ito , with whom he also triumphed in the team classification.

After graduating from university, he joined the corporate team at chemical company Asahi Kasei in 2020 .
