Alair Vilar Fernandes de Melo (born June 5, 1916 in Natal , Rio Grande do Norte , Brazil , † August 20, 1999 ) was a Brazilian clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Natal .

Life

Alair Vilar Fernandes de Melo received the sacrament of ordination on November 19, 1939 after studying Catholic theology and philosophy .

On March 17, 1970 Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the first bishop of Amargosa . The Archbishop of São Salvador da Bahia , Cardinal Eugênio de Araújo Sales , donated him episcopal ordination on May 17 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Caicó , Manuel Tavares de Araújo , and the Archbishop of Natal, Nivaldo Monte .

On April 6, 1988, Pope John Paul II appointed him Archbishop of Natal. On October 27, 1993, John Paul II accepted Juan José Iriarte's resignation due to reasons of age.
