Álamos is a city with about 9,500 inhabitants and the capital of the municipality of the same name (municipio) with a total of about 25,000 inhabitants in the south of the Mexican state of Sonora . The place is classified as Pueblo Mágico .
Location and climate
The place Álamos is surrounded by the mountains of the Sierra Madre Occidental approx. 375 km southeast of Hermosillo at an altitude of approx. 380 m ; it is about 100 km to the coast of the Gulf of California . The border town of Nogales is about 650 km north. The climate is temperate to warm; the abundant rain for northern Mexico (approx. 675 mm / year) falls almost exclusively in the summer half-year.

From the 18th to the early 20th centuries, Álamos was the center of an area of several silver mines . Corn, beans, vegetables, agaves and opuntia are grown in the fields in the area; There are small craft shops and shops in the village itself.
history
Álamos was founded in the late 17th century following the discovery of a silver ore mine. In 1828, ie seven years after Mexico's independence (1821), Álamos even became the capital of the "Western State" ( Estado de Occidente ), which was founded in 1824 but dissolved six years later . During the time of the French intervention in Mexico (1861–1867), the “Battle of Álamos” took place on September 24, 1865 in the middle of the city - which was ultimately victorious for the French.

- The Iglesia de la Purísima Concepción , built from 1757 to 1804, is the main church in the city; it was temporarily the bishopric of the diocese of Sonora created in 1779 .
