Alan Roger Davies (born March 6, 1966 ) is a British actor , writer , comedian and television presenter . He has played the leading role in the BBC One television series Jonathan Creek since 1997 and has been the only permanent guest on the BBC Two quiz program QI since 2003 .

Life

Davies was born in Loughton , Essex ; he grew up in Chingford . His mother died of leukemia when he was six years old. He graduated from the University of Kent with a degree in drama in 1988 , which awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2003 . He has been a fan of Arsenal football club since childhood . He was the presenter of the club's podcast "It's Up For Grabs Now"; since 2011 he has also moderated the new Arsenal podcast "The Tuesday Club".

Davies is married; Best man was his friend and colleague Bill Bailey . He has three children.

Comedian

Davie's stand-up comedy career began in 1988 with an appearance on Whitstable . In 1994 he won the Edinburgh Festival Comedy Critic Award . This program was released under the title Alan Davies Live at the Lyric . His programs "Urban Trauma" (1998, BBC One ) and "Life is Pain" (2012, Dave ) have also been shown on television and released on DVD.

Radio and television

In 1994, Davies got his first radio show ( Alan's Big One on BBC Radio 1 ) and his first television appearance ( One for the Road on Channel 4 ). Since then he has been regularly present on radio and television, as an actor (e.g. in Hotel Babylon , Agatha Christie's Marple , Lewis - Der Oxford Krimi ), moderator (e.g. Alan Davies Après-Ski , BBC Two ) or guest show ( e.g. Top Gear ). He became known to a wide audience through the title role in the television series Jonathan Creek (1997 to 2004, BBC One).

In 2001 Davies won the Best Actor Award at the Festival de Télévision de Monte-Carlo .

In the QI panel show, which has been running since 2003 and has been moderated by Stephen Fry , he is a regular guest, while the other three guests change each time. He just missed out on one of more than 150 episodes of QI (episode 10 of Serie D) because he attended the Champions League final in 2006 between Arsenal and FC Barcelona in Paris. His chair remained empty on this show.

Autobiography

Davies' youth memoir My Favorite People and Me, 1978-88 was published by Penguin Books in 2009 . Some of the favorite people of the title are Anton Chekhov , John Belushi , Barry Sheene , Margaret Thatcher (but "only for a few days"), John McEnroe and Starsky & Hutch . The paperback edition is titled Rebel Without A Clue: How the 80s Made Me .
