Alan Dugan

Alan Dugan (* 12. February 1923 in New York City , New York ; † 3. September 2003 in Hyannis , Massachusetts ) was an American poet and university lecturer , in 1962 for his poetry collection Poems both the Pulitzer Prize for poetry and received the National Book Award for Poetry . In 2001 he received the National Book Award for poetry for the second time for his poetry collection Poems Seven: New and Complete Poetry .

Life

Dugan began a post-school undergraduate degree at Queens College of the City University of New York , but he interrupted to serve as a member of the US Army in the Second World War participate. After the end of the war, he continued his studies at Olivet College and finally graduated from Mexico City College in 1949 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). In the following years he worked in various professions in New York City before he began his writing career in the late 1950s with financial support from a Guggenheim scholarship .

For his first volume of poems, Poems , published in 1961 in the Yale Series of Younger Poets , Dugan received both the Pulitzer Prize for poetry and the National Book Award for poetry in 1962 . In 1967 he accepted a professorship at Sarah Lawrence College and taught there until 1971. In 2001, he received the National Book Award for poetry for the second time for his last collection of poems, Poems Seven: New and Complete Poetry .

Dugan, who was married to the painter Judith Shahn, died in September 2003 at the age of eighty of complications from pneumonia .
