Alan Randy May (born January 14, 1965 in Barrhead , Alberta ) is a former Canadian ice hockey player and current coach who played in the position of the left winger . In the National Hockey League he played for the Washington Capitals for a long time .
Career
Alan May began his career in the National Hockey League in his second senior season. He joined the Boston Bruins in 1987 as a free agent . Here he completed only three games, however, and spent the season alternately with the Maine Mariners and the Nova Scotia Oilers in the American Hockey League . In the following season he made only three games in the NHL with the Edmonton Oilers and played again most of the time in the minor league . He made his breakthrough in the NHL with his move to the Washington Capitals before the 1989/90 season . After five seasons he left the capital and still played for the Dallas Stars and Calgary Flames , but he was never as successful as with the Capitals. May then let his career end in various minor leagues before ending it in 1999. Between his active career, May moved to the coaching bench in the 1997/98 season , but returned to the ice only a year later.
The coaching career that had begun two years earlier continued in May 1999 and became head coach for the Lubbock Cotton Kings for one year . Now he took a long hiatus and in 2008 became an assistant coach with the Norfolk Admirals .
