The Albert-Martmöller-Gymnasium ( AMG for short ) is one of three high schools in the city of Witten . Its namesake is the unionist Albert Martmöller .

history

In the mid-1960s there was a rush of schoolchildren in Witten that the two existing high schools, the Schiller-Gymnasium and the Ruhr-Gymnasium Witten , could no longer cope with. After the two schools submitted an application to the city administration to find a suitable solution, the first idea arose to found a third grammar school in Witten. Research by the city showed that a location in the area of the Annen district would provide better school supplies for the eastern part of Witten. Therefore, an urban site on Immermannstrasse near the Witten-Annen Nord train station , on the site of the former Annener Gußstahlwerk satellite camp, was considered for the third grammar school , which was later found to be suitable for construction. After developing the building plans for the city. Gymnasium Annen for boys and girls turned out, however, that the necessary financial means could not be used. Since the demand at the two high schools in Witten was still too great, the Münster school council insisted on setting up another. In 1967, when the scheduled date for the start of the third grammar school had already been postponed, the school committee decided to use the vacated building of the Albert Martmöller elementary school for the new grammar school. After a short time, it was found that the 1957/1958 built building of the elementary school in a few years will also not be able to withstand the increasing number of students. So it was decided to add another building to the old building as the main building. The interior of the main building, which houses several scientific rooms, was completed in 1970. In the following year a gym (as well as a gym and a work room) was built on the site. In 1977 the new building was erected on Oberstrasse.

classes

The four-train AMG is currently attended by around 1,000 students. In the area of advanced courses, there is a cooperation with the Schiller and Ruhr Gymnasium. In the lower grades (5–7), brass and natural science profile classes are offered. The range of subjects includes the linguistic-literary-artistic ( German , English , Latin , French , Spanish , literature , music , art ), social science ( history , politics / social sciences , pedagogy ) and mathematical-scientific-technical ( mathematics , computer science , biology , Physics , chemistry ) field of activity as well as the subjects geography , philosophy , religious studies and sports . In addition to the regular lessons, there are currently 15 different voluntary working groups, most of which are in the afternoon.

Language tests

At the Albert-Martmöller-Gymnasium Witten, language certificates can be obtained in the subjects English ( Cambridge ESOL ), Spanish ( DELE program) and French ( DELF-DALF program ).

monitoring

In 2014, the AMG was the first school in North Rhine-Westphalia to install surveillance cameras at several entrances . In 2020 it was announced that these cameras are not allowed to save data, which the school said they never would have done.

In 2018, the AMG introduced new student ID cards with an RFID chip . Since then, access to the outside toilet has only been possible using the RFID function on the student IDs. The toilet visits of the students were electronically logged from 2018 to 2020. After criticism by the Pirate Party and a statement requested by the State Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information , which confirmed the legal opinion of the Pirate Party, this storage of toilet visits, known as "pee logs", was discontinued at the beginning of 2020, according to the school.

Others

In 1984/85, the then class 10a and their teacher Helmut Schorlemmer researched the history of the Annener Gußstahlwerk satellite camp and triggered a public discussion of communal forgetting with their article published as a brochure . On the initiative of the students, the city of Witten put up a plaque on the edge of the remaining area of the camp in 1985 . In 2013 the memorial plaque was moved to the remaining area.

Fragments of the Berlin Wall in the school yard

Since June 2010, three segments of the Berlin Wall have been on loan in the schoolyard with the title Homage to the Young Generations , which were painted by young artists from the upper level of the AMG and the Berlin-based French artist Thierry Noir . The installation was inaugurated in September 2011 a. a. by President of the Bundestag Norbert Lammert .

There is a rainbow group for lesbian or gay schoolchildren and gender-neutral toilets .

On October 2nd, 2018 the Albert-Martmöller-Gymnasium was awarded as a school without racism - school with courage .
