The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium is a school in the north of the Berlin district of Neukölln . The grammar school is named after the Nobel Peace Prize laureate Albert Schweitzer .

history

The grammar school was founded in 1907 as the municipal higher girls' school in Rixdorf . Until 1912 the town of Neukölln was still called Rixdorf . The building was designed by the architect Reinhold Kiehl and is now a listed building .

Previous names of the school were:

  • Municipal college with Lyzeum I Neukölln
  • Municipal Oberlyzeum (Oberschule Berlin-Neukölln)
  • Municipal Oberlyzeum Berlin-Neukölln (secondary school direction)
  • Municipal Oberlyzeum (Oberschule Neukölln)
  • Municipal secondary school Neukölln
  • Agnes-Miegel-Schule (secondary school for girls)
  • Neukölln High School II

On August 2, 1952, Albert Schweitzer gave his consent to renaming the school.

Today the school is called Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium .

particularities

The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium is an all-day high school in bound form. A varied school day has been designed for pupils from 7th to 10th grade, which includes a daily 45-minute lunch break three times a week, 90-minute free work time and time slots for up to two working groups.

The school day starts at 8 a.m. for the students. Classes usually end at 4:15 p.m. in the afternoon (Monday to Thursday). On Fridays, lessons end at 2:30 p.m. School life is characterized by an orientation towards independent and self-organized work. The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium has been part of the Berlin network of schools with learning coaching since 2018. There has been a learning coaching development team since 2019.

The school's profile is based on language and media education: the language education concept is used in all subjects in terms of content and is not limited to German lessons. Thus, the goal of getting the students fit in the scientific and educational language with the Abitur is pursued continuously and sustainably. As a “chalk-free school”, the ASG is 100% equipped with interactive smartboards . Interactive touchboards have been installed since 2019. In addition, there is WLAN for classroom use, tablet and notebook sets for use in various learning groups and the training of students to become data protection guides.

The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium has one of the largest sports halls in Neukölln, measuring 45 x 21 meters. It was built in 1993 and inaugurated on May 4, 1994. The cost of around 13 million marks (adjusted for purchasing power in today's currency: around 9.7 million euros) was borne by the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family .

The conversion of the smaller sports hall into a cafeteria , the “Schweitzer Hof”, was completed in September 2010. This conversion was necessary to meet the requirements of an all-day school.

Another special feature is the range of compulsory elective subjects that have existed since the 2008/2009 school year.

From the 7th grade onwards, all students choose courses that combine subjects, e.g. B. Music / German / art , mathematics / computer science , social sciences or pure subjects: Spanish and French as third foreign languages, sport etc.

The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium is the only Gymnasium in Neukölln that offers sport as an elective in grades 8 and 9.

In the 9th grade, students choose elective courses for the 10th grade. The students choose two subjects that are to be chosen as advanced courses in upper secondary level. The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium offers almost all advanced courses, possibly in cooperation: social sciences , German and arts subjects, foreign languages, natural sciences , mathematics and computer science.

Lessons in the compulsory elective subjects take four school hours per week. The compulsory elective subjects have the character of main subjects, which means that two class tests must be written in them per school semester.

social commitment

The students organize donation campaigns as far as they can. In addition, there is a selection on the topic of social commitment from the offer of the working groups: for example AG Social Learning and AG School Sanitary Service . In 2019 fundraising events took place. a. for the DKMS and boat refugees. In 2020, the students got involved with the Australian Red Cross and the WWF .

The former school newspaper ¿DéjàVu? supported a sponsored child in an SOS Children's Village in Nairobi . The school newspaper was also a member of Amnesty International and the WWF.

School in the neighborhood

The Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium is located in the north of Neukölln in the catchment area of the Reuterkiez . The student body reflects the neighborhood with all its facets. The proportion of students with a non-German language of origin is around 95% with a decreasing trend. With over 20 different ethnic groups , the image of the cultural diversity of the neighborhood can also be found at the Albert-Schweitzer-Gymnasium. There is close cooperation with the Flughafenstrasse district management and the associated network of educational institutions in the neighborhood.
