Map of the Reuterkiez

The Reuterkiez , often referred to as Reuterquartier (colloquially: Kreuzkölln ), is an area in the Berlin district of Neukölln in the district of the same name . The area got its name after the centrally located Reuterplatz, which was named after the German writer Fritz Reuter .

Location and dates

Located in the north of Neukölln, the Maybachufer of the Landwehr Canal and the Kottbusser Damm form the border to the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district and the north-western demarcation of the neighborhood. In the southwest the Sonnenallee borders the quarter, in the southeast the Wildenbruchstrasse and the Kiehlufer form a border to other parts of Neukölln.

The Reuter district has an area of around 70  hectares and, with around 18,500 inhabitants, is one of the most densely populated areas in Berlin (264 inhabitants per hectare). The Reuterkiez can be seen as a typical residential area of the Wilhelminian era . Front building and courtyard development, mixing trade, residential and commercial as well as small and medium-sized apartments represent both the advantages and disadvantages of the location.

History of origin

Around 1850, due to the connection to the Landwehr Canal, the first commercial operations on Maybachufer emerged on the former swamp and meadow area. The Kottbusser Damm and the parallel streets were built with residential houses and small businesses. Between 1871 and 1905, as the number of inhabitants increased, a Berlin old building district emerged, which is considered typical with its backyard factories and commercial yards.

Gentrification processes

With an unemployment rate of 35%, a proportion of foreigners (residents without German citizenship ) of 30.5% and a proportion of children of 16.5%, the quarter - just like its surroundings - is considered a social problem area in Berlin. Located between the nightlife mile , alternative quarters, neighborhoods on the upswing, gentrification and dog-waste-polluted areas, the opinions in the press show a different picture of the problem area.

As positive as well as negative sign of the changes in the neighborhood , the designation Kreuzkölln - a portmanteau of cross mountain and New Kölln  be seen -. On the one hand, the term shows that the far north of Neukölln follows the development in the neighboring Kreuzberg, both in terms of the opportunities for going out and the social mix. On the other hand, it is seen by long-term residents of the neighborhood as a sign of unwanted changes such as rising rents or the displacement of old tenants and businesses and rejected.
