Albert Christoph Dies (born February 11, 1755 in Hanover , † December 29, 1822 in Vienna ) was a German painter , etcher and biographer.

life and work

This was born in Hanover in 1755. He received no artistic training in the classical sense, but appropriated his creative way autodidactic to. In 1775 he moved to Rome . He belonged to the German circle of artists around Jakob Philipp Hackert , Johann Christian Reinhart and Joseph Anton Koch also belonged to this group. This refined his knowledge through copies of paintings, also by Hackert, and also by Claude Lorrain . This made commissioned work, mostly coloring of engravings, also by Giovanni Battista Piranesi , in order to finance the stay. In the years 1792 to 1796 he created together with Reinhart andJacob Wilhelm Mechau a series of prospectuses etched by Mahlerisch . This consists of 72 individual etchings and was published in Nuremberg . Johann Wolfgang von Goethe mentions this as "skillful" in his Italian trip . In 1797 he moved again, this time to Vienna. There he was appointed gallery director by Prince Esterházy . In 1810 one of the first biographies on Joseph Haydn appeared in the Camesinaische Buchhandlung in Vienna, written by Dies, under the title Biographische Nachrichten von Joseph Haydn . His health deteriorated sharply towards the end of his life and he died in Vienna in 1822.

A watercolor from 1777 - a path near Tivoli with a landscape on the reverse is shown - is in the Staatliche Museen Kassel . It has the format 30 × 48.6 cm and is signed by him with "AC Dies a Tivoli 1777". The picture is listed under the inventory number AZ 2053, serial no. No. 5296.
