Albert Dagnaux (born July 10, 1861 in Paris , † November 22, 1933 in Mantes-la-Jolie ; full name Albert Marie Adolphe Dagnaux ) was a French painter and engraver of impressionism and naturalism .

Life

Albert Dagnaux was born in the 16th arrondissement of Paris to Eugène Dagnaux († 1871) and Angeline Torriani († 1920). His parents owned the small restaurant “Le Dagnaux” in the 6th arrondissement on Rue de l'Ancienne-Comédie, his older brother Charles was a jeweler in Paris.

From 1878 Dagnaux studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris with Ernest Victor Hareux .

In 1883 Dagnaux exhibited his painting Gentilly, quatre heures du soir in the Salon de la Société des artistes français , but received no fee for it.

In 1890 he left the salon to join the Société nationale des beaux-arts . Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier became his sponsor. In the same year his work began to be recognized by the critics of the era. Three years later (1893) he had his picture Avenue du Bois de Boulogne; club des Pannés achieved its first major success.

Dagnaux took part in the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 and presented his painting Le jardin du général aux Invalides . In the following year he married the Spaniard Marie Esteva (* 1867 in Audincourt ). In the following time they lived together in different apartments in Paris until they moved to Mantes-la-Jolie around 1910.

Dagnaux is buried in the Duhamel cemetery in Mantes-la-Jolie.

Together with others, he made the frescoes of the refectory at the Lycée Fénelon de Paris.Three pictures can be assigned to him: The first, Ronde de jeunes filles ou Les Jeux de l'enfance et de la jeunesse , was sold to the state in 1905 for 6,000 francs. The work ended in 1919 with the paintings Le Nid and Le Martin-pêcheur , for which 6,000 francs were also paid in 1914.

From August 1881, Dagnaux, under the direction of Louis and Pierre Carrier-Belleuse, took part in the creation of a 125 × 16 m panorama depicting the fifth apparition of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous .

  • From October 2009 to March 2010 a retrospective entitled "Albert Dagnaux, entre naturalisme et expressionnisme" (Albert Dagnaux, between naturalism and expressionism) took place at the Musée de l'Hôtel-Dieu in Mantes-la-Jolie.
