Albert Fraenkel (medic, 1848)
Albert Fraenkel (born March 10, 1848 in Frankfurt (Oder) , † July 6, 1916 in Berlin ) was a German internist and bacteriologist .
family
Fraenkel was born the son of the Jewish hardware dealer David Fraenkel. His mother was the niece of Ludwig Traube , a professor of internal medicine .
His son was the linguist Ernst Fraenkel .
Life
In Berlin he attended the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium .
In 1866 he was a high school, began his medical studies in Berlin and was four years later on the adrenal disease Addison's doctorate . In 1872 he received his license to practice medicine . Later he was assistant to Ludwig Traube at the Charité and, after his death, from 1876 to 1887 with his successor Ernst Viktor von Leyden . In 1877 he completed his habilitation and was appointed professor in 1884. In 1890 he became director of the newly built Am Urban hospital in Berlin-Kreuzberg alongside Werner Körte and also headed its internal department. In 1891 Fraenkel was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
Fraenkel's wife died in January 1916; six months later he died of a heart attack himself . His grave is in the Weissensee Jewish Cemetery .
meaning
Fraenkel discovered Diplococcus pneumoniae lanceatus , the causative agent of croupy pneumonia , which was later named after him. He also dealt with Caisson disease in divers, the clinical symptoms of arteriosclerosis , pulmonary tuberculosis , various blood diseases and bronchial asthma .
The Fraenkelufer on the Landwehr Canal in Berlin-Kreuzberg has borne his name since July 1947 .
