Albert Kapengut

Albert Sinovievich Kapengut ( Russian Альберт Зиновьевич Капенгут , Belarusian Альбэрт Капэнгут / Albert Kapenhut; born July 4, 1944 in Kazan ) is a Belarusian chess player and coach.

Life

In 1961 he won the Minsk championship . He was able to win the championship of the Belarusian SSR seven times : 1962, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1976, 1977 and 1978. In 2003 he won the championship of New Jersey.

From 1964 to 1968, with the exception of 1967, he was a member of the Soviet national team at the annual student world championships, such as Eduard Buchman , Roman Dzindzichashvili , Boris Gulko , Wiktar Kuprejtschyk , Hennadij Kusmin , Volodymyr Savon and Volodymyr Tukmakow . The team achieved the gold medal, with Kapengut also having the best result of all players on the fourth board in Örebro in 1966 (7.5 points from 8 games) and in 1968 in Ybbs an der Donau the best result of all players on the first reserve board (with 6 from 8).

As a chess trainer he trained for example Juri Schulman, Ilia Smirin , Boris Gelfand and Michail Tal , whose second he was in 1979 and 1980. He was also part of Anatoly Karpov's theoretical staff . He now teaches chess at the Kings & Queens Chess Club, among others . He himself was trained by Issaak Boleslawski and Alexei Sokolski .

He has held the title of International Master since 1991 . His Elo rating is 2385 (as of September 2014), but he is listed as inactive because he has not played an Elo-rated game since the 43rd Annual World Amateur Team & US Team East tournament held in Parsippany in February 2013 . Kapengut's best Elo rating was 2490 for 1973. His best historical rating before the Elo rating was introduced was 2598, he achieved it in December 1967 and was 63rd in the world rankings. Since April 2008 he has been playing for the US Chess Federation . In the United States Chess League he played for the New Jersey Knockouts from 2009 to 2013 .
