Albert Neuhuys

Johannes Albert Neuhuys (born June 10, 1844 in Utrecht ; † February 6, 1914 in Orselina ) was a Dutch genre and portrait painter of the Laren School and younger brother of the painters Jozef Hendrik Neuhuys (1841–1890) and Jan Antoon Neuhuys (1832– 1891).

Neuhuys attended the municipal drawing school in Utrecht from 1858 to 1860 and then worked for the lithographer Van de Weyer, who went bankrupt two years later. From this time on Neuhuys devoted himself to drawing and painting. From 1868 to 1872 he studied at the Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen , where he was supported by a royal scholarship. Here he painted interiors based on the example of the artist Pieter de Hooch , which emphasized the sheen of satin clothing.

In 1872 Neuhuys moved to Amsterdam , where he met Jozef Israëls , Anton Mauve and the brothers Jacob Maris and Matthijs Maris . In 1876 he moved to The Hague .

Following the advice of Jozef Israëls, Neuhuys moved to Laren in 1883 . Two years later, Anton Mauve also moved there. Together with him, Neuhuys was considered the founder of the Laren School. He painted the farmers and weavers in their houses and rented a barn in which he drew and painted local farmers.

In 1885 he moved to Hilversum . From 1900 he lived in Amsterdam, where he became known as a painter of the Laren scenes. He visited Italy in 1895 , Algeria in 1896 , Austria in 1901 , Spain in 1903 and the United States in 1904 , lived there from 1908 to 1910. He moved to Zurich in 1910 , but continued to visit Laren in spring and autumn.

He was awarded gold medals at exhibitions in Munich, Vienna, Paris, Chicago and Budapest.

He died in Orselina near Locarno and was buried in Oud Eik en Duinen, a cemetery in The Hague.
