Albrecht VI.

Albrecht VI. of Bavaria , called the Leuchtenberger (born February 26, 1584 in Munich ; † July 5, 1666 there ) was Duke of Bavaria-Leuchtenberg from the House of Wittelsbach .

Prince Albrecht of Bavaria, later Duke of Leuchtenberg

Life

Albrecht was the sixth son of ten children of Duke Wilhelm V of Bavaria (1548–1626) and his wife Princess Renata of Lorraine (1544–1602), daughter of Duke Franz I and the Danish Princess Christina .

On February 26, 1612, Prince Albrecht married Princess Mechthildis von Leuchtenberg (1588–1634), daughter of Landgrave Georg Ludwig and his wife Princess Marie Salome of Baden-Baden in Munich . The harmonious marriage resulted in five children:

Since his brother, Duke Maximilian I of Bavaria, remained childless for a long time, it looked like one of Albrecht's children would inherit the Duchy of Bavaria until Ferdinand Maria's birth . During Ferdinand Maria's minority, Albrecht ruled Bavaria as spa administrator from 1651 to 1654.

By marrying Princess Mechthildis, Albert came into the possession of the Landgraviate of Leuchtenberg in 1646 after the line of Landgraves of Leuchtenberg had expired in the male line . However, he did not call himself a Landgrave, but rather the Duke of Leuchtenberg. In 1650 he exchanged the imperial county of Haag for Leuchtenberg from his brother Elector Maximilian I. Leuchtenberg received his nephew Maximilian Philipp Hieronymus .

Albrecht died on July 5, 1666 in Munich and was buried in the pilgrimage church in Altötting .
