production
In March 2011, the first roles in the series were cast with actors. The central leading roles were cast with Whitney Cummings , who also contributed the idea to the series, and Chris D'Elia . Beverly D'Angelo , Zoe Lister-Jones and Maulik Pancholy were hired for other roles in the series . At the same time, Betsy Thomas was commissioned as showrunner. On May 11, 2011, NBC officially ordered a series for the script. In August, Beverly D'Angelo, who had a recurring role as Whitney's mother, left the project. She was replaced by Jane Kaczmarek . As a consequence of the actor change, parts of the pilot had to be re-shot.
After only two episodes broadcast, NBC increased the number of episodes to a full season in the form of 22 episodes. In October 2011, the role of Whitney's father was cast with Peter Gallagher . In May 2012, NBC extended the series for a second season despite moderate success. A little later it was announced that Wil Calhoun would replace Betsy Thomas as the showrunner of the series for the second season. In August 2012, Maulik Pancholy announced that he would be leaving the series and returning to 30 Rock instead . The reason for the exit was given by Cummings that the series will focus more on the central couple in its second season than on the rest of the main characters. In September 2012, Tone Bell joined the main cast of the series. The plan was to broadcast the second season from October 19, 2012 together with Community . However, NBC announced in early October 2012 that the broadcast of the two sitcoms would be postponed. Almost two weeks later, November 14, 2012 was announced as the start date for the second season. In early November 2012, before the broadcast began, NBC commissioned five more scripts for the second season. About a month later, the station increased the number of episodes in the second season from 13 to 16 episodes.
In May 2013, the series was discontinued by NBC after a total of 38 episodes.

reception
The series received a Metascore of 49/100 on Metacritic based on 25 reviews.
“The chemistry between Whitney Cummings and her TV partner Chris D'Elia couldn't have been better. Often - especially during the end credits - one had the feeling that the two were at least partially improvising their interludes and not only wanted to make the audience laugh, but also each other. And with it usually also had great success. Above all, however, the series was conceptually convincing: “Whitney” succeeded in what hardly any other half-hour comedy series has succeeded since “ Mad About You ”, namely to convincingly bring an everyday couple onto the screen. With all the mistakes and weaknesses that characterize the two partners. And above all without any romantic exaggeration that many romantic comedies make appear so clichéd and stale. "
