Alexander Alexejewitsch Soldatow ( Russian Александр Алексеевич Солдатов , born August 27, 1915 in the village of Prigoroda, Vologda Governorate ; † January 22, 1999 in Moscow ) was a Soviet diplomat who was ambassador to the United Kingdom between 1960 and 1966. , From 1966 to 1968 Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador to Cuba between 1968 and 1970 , Rector of the Moscow State Institute for International Relations from 1971 to 1974 and most recently Ambassador to Lebanon between 1974 and 1986 .

Soldatov joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) as a member in 1939 and began studying at the Moscow State Pedagogical University , graduating in 1941 as a candidate for history. Then in 1941 he began studying at the Higher Diplomatic School of the USSR and became deputy secretary for agriculture in the People's Commissariat for Foreign Affairs . After he was attaché at the embassy in Iran between 1941 and 1942 and vice-consul at the consulate general in Pretoria in 1942, he was first secretary between 1942 and 1944 and then from 1944 to 1946 counselor at the embassy in Australia .

In 1948 Soldatov was first class counselor for political affairs at the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City and, as such, was also the Soviet representative on the UN Trust Council until 1953 . After his return to the Soviet Union, he was first head of the United Nations Department of Affairs between 1953 and 1954 and then head of the America Department in the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1954 to 1960. Most recently he was a member of the College of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1958 and 1960.

On January 14, 1960, Soldatov succeeded Yakov Alexandrowitsch Malik as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the United Kingdom and held this post until he was replaced by Mikhail Nikolajewitsch Smirnowski on January 27, 1966 March 1971 as a member of the Central Revision Commission of the CPSU. On his return from Great Britain he became Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs in January 1966 and held this office until January 1968.

Soldatow himself took over on January 15, 1968 as the successor to Alexander Ivanovich Alexejew the post of extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the USSR in Cuba and remained there until December 4, 1970, after which Nikita Pavlovich Tolubiejew was his successor. In May 1971 he succeeded Mikhail Danilowitsch Jakowlew as rector of the Moscow State Institute for International Relations . He held this position until October 1974 and was then replaced by Nikolai Ivanovich Lebedew .

Most recently Soldatov replaced Sarwar Olimjonowitsch Azimov as extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of the USSR to Lebanon on October 17, 1974 , and held this office until he retired on April 22, 1986. His successor was then replaced by Vasily Ivanovich Kolotuscha .

Soldatov has received several awards for his longstanding services, including the Order of Lenin , the Order of the October Revolution , the Order of the Red Banner of Labor three times , the Order of Friendship between Peoples , the Order of the Red Star twice , the Badge of Honor of the Soviet Union and the Jubilee Medal “In memory of the 100th birthday of Vladimir Ilyich Lenin” and the “Labor Veteran” medal .
