Alexander Bernhard von Spaen

Alexander Bernhard von Spaen (* December 24, 1669 , † December 11, 1743 ) was a Prussian major general and resident commander of the Order of St. John in Wietersheim . He was also Drost in Goch and Gennep , and heir to Ringenberg and Hamminkeln .

Life

origin

His parents were the Brandenburg General Field Marshal Alexander von Spaen (1619-1692) and his wife Henriette, born von Arnheim († August 4, 1671).

Military career

In 1694 Spaen became major of the cavalry in Brandenburg . On January 31, 1705 he became a colonel , then a brigadier, on November 29, 1709 major general and on 1711 knight of the Order of the Black Eagle . He had already participated in 17 campaigns when he was seriously injured in the battle of Malplaquet . He was shot in the head and lost an eye.

family

He was married to Johanna von Laer (March 1, 1679 - November 2, 1705) since July 1700 and had a son and a daughter:

  • Johann Heinrich Friedrich (1705–1762), Prussian major general
  • Hendrina Johanna Dorothea (1702 - March 19, 1737), canon at St. Walburga-Stift zu Soest, buried in the collegiate church Fröndenberg / Ruhr.

Alexander Sweder von Spaen (born November 15, 1703, † November 2, 1768), Dutch major general, was his nephew (son of his brother Friedrich Wilhelm von Spaen).

He was involved in the attempted escape of the Prussian Crown Prince Friedrich (Katte affair) and was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
