Alexander Brink

Alexander Brink (born March 9, 1970 in Düsseldorf ) is a German economist and philosopher . He is professor of business and business ethics at the University of Bayreuth and founder and partner of concern GmbH, a management consultancy specializing in corporate governance, responsibility and sustainability based in Cologne and Bayreuth .

Live and act

Alexander Brink is the son of Gudrun and Günter Brink. He attended the Albert-Martmöller-Gymnasium in Witten. After graduating from high school in 1989, he did community service in the Lutherhaus retirement and nursing home in Witten-Bommern. Until 1990 he was responsible for the care and maintenance of inpatient heavy nursing cases and he worked there as a geriatric nurse until 2002.

Alexander Brink began studying economics at the Ruhr University in Bochum , which he completed in 1996 with a degree in economics, as well as studying philosophy , psychology and business administration , which he completed in 1998 with a master's degree. He then did his doctorate in philosophy and economics within three years. phil. at the University of Bochum (1999) and Dr. rer. pole. at the University of Witten / Herdecke (2001). In the meantime he had a research stay in 1997 at the American Yale University in New Haven. He also worked for companies such as Mannesmann in Wetter in 1992, in Sydney in 1994 and in New York in 1997 and held doctoral positions at the Bavarian chemical company Trostberg AG from 2000 to 2001 and at Degussa AG in Düsseldorf from 2001 to 2002 . He gained practical experience in the areas of corporate development, corporate strategy, controlling, finance and sales.

From 2002 to 2008 Alexander Brink, who until then was a lecturer at the University of Witten / Herdecke, was appointed one of the first junior professors in Bavaria at the University of Bayreuth . He represented applied ethics in the Bachelor and Master programs of the interdisciplinary and excellent reform course Philosophy & Economics. Alexander Brink has been a full professor of business and business ethics in the philosophy department of the Faculty of Cultural Studies since 2008 . As a visiting professor for corporate governance & philosophy, he also taught at the Reinhard Mohn Institute (RMI) at the University of Witten / Herdecke from 2008 to 2016 . He previously worked at the Institute for Corporate Governance (ICG) there for two years.

In 2010 Alexander Brink founded the consulting company concern GmbH, based in Cologne and later in Bayreuth. As a spin-off of the Philosophy & Economics course at the University of Bayreuth, concern was one of the first corporate governance, responsibility and sustainability consultancies in Germany. The services extend to the fields of strategy, marketing and sales, corporate responsibility and digitization.

Since 2010, Alexander Brink has also been a lecturer at the Wuppertal / Bethel Church University as part of a doctoral program for the qualification of managers in companies in the social economy and the church. He has also been a lecturer in the Executive Master for Family Entrepreneurship at the Zeppelin University in Friedrichshafen since 2011 . He was the scientific director of the Center for Business Ethics (ZfW) in Berlin from 2013 to 2019.

Alexander Brink has 16 active memberships, which extend across associations, networks, forums, societies, institutes and clubs. Since 1996 he has been a member of the European Business Ethics Network (EBEN) and the German Network for Business Ethics eV (DNWE). In 2000 he became a member of the Schmalenbach Society (SBG). In addition, he has been a member of the European Society for Research in Ethics (Societas Ethica) since 2004, a member of the Verein für Socialpolitik (VFS) since 2007 and a member of the Research Center for Family Businesses (FoFamU) since 2014.

Research, teaching and advice

Alexander Brink researches and teaches at the University of Bayreuth on the subjects of corporate governance , corporate responsibility and sustainability. He developed a normative theory of enterprise based on promises and advocates a cooperation economy in the fourth sector. He also advises companies on value positioning and the ethics of artificial intelligence . He is also a co-initiator of the FAIRE Consulting initiative for savings banks and cooperative banks.

He is co-editor of the international series Ethical Economy, Studies in Economic Ethics and Philosophy (Springer) and the series Diakoniewwissenschaft und Diakoniemanagement (Nomos).
