Alexander Ivanovich Ustyumenko

Alexander Ivanovich Ustjumenko ( Russian Александр Иванович Устюменко ; born October 29 . Jul / 11. November  1913 greg. In the village Gorbiza at Sretensk ; † 6. April 1992 in Moscow ) was a Russian intelligence officer of the Red Army and physicists .

Life

From November 1934 Ustyumenko served in the Red Army. He completed a training course in the 10th staff department of the Special Red Banner Far East Army (1934-1935) and then worked on the staff of Marshal Blücher (1935-1937). He then studied at the Military Faculty of the Moscow Institute of Transportation Engineers (1937-1941). Enlightenment courses followed.

During the German-Soviet war he was assistant to the chief of the intelligence department of the general staff with promotion to major . He was sent to the front several times with special assignments. He mastered cryptography and in 1943 developed the cipher code for radio reconnaissance .

1945–1954 he was a senior officer in the headquarters of the General Staff. From March 1954 to June 1974 he headed the special control service for the observation of nuclear weapons explosions . Together with Igor Wassiljewitsch Kurtschatow , Isaak Konstantinowitsch Kikoin , Grigori Alexandrowitsch Gamburzew and Michail Alexandrowitsch Sadowski, he was one of the leading figures in the development of the Soviet system for detecting nuclear weapons explosions. Ustyumenko was also involved in the Geneva negotiations to limit nuclear weapons tests (1958–1961), which led to the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapon Tests in the Atmosphere, Space and Underwater . In 1962 he was promoted to major general. In 1974 he retired.

In 1980 Ustyumenko received his doctorate in physical-mathematical sciences .

Ustyumenko was buried in the Trojekurovo cemetery in Moscow .
