Alexander Karl Nikolai von Lieven ( Russian Александр Александрович Ливен Alexander Alexandrowitsch Liwen , born July 7, 1860 in Senten , Courland ; † February 23, 1914 in Udine , Italy ) was a Russian vice admiral and chief of the naval general staff.

Life

He was a member of the Baltic German aristocratic family of the Prince of Lieven . His parents were Alexander Prince von Lieven (1833–1876), his mother Louise, b. Countess von Keyserling (1833–1902).

He began his career with the Cadet Corps in Lichterfelde , advanced to the position of Prussian ensign and, as such, joined the Semyonovskoye bodyguard regiment in St. Petersburg in 1878 , i.e. into Russian service. He became a midshipman in the fleet in 1884 and was promoted to captain II in 1898 .

In the Spanish-American War he was the Russian military attaché on the American side. From 1902 to 1904 he was in command of the cruiser "Разбойник" and in June 1905 interim commander of the cruiser " Diana ", which he rescued in the port of Saigon during the Russo-Japanese War . In the same year he received his promotion to captain I. Ranges . After he was promoted to Rear Admiral , he was Chief of the Navy General Staff from 1911 to 1914. In 1912 he was promoted to vice admiral.

Lieven was the holder of the Order of St. Anna II. Class (1903), the Order of St. Vladimir III. Degree (1910) and the Order of St. Stanislaus 1st Class (1911).
