Alexander Mikhailovich Sibiryakov ( Russian Александр Михайлович Сибиряков * 26 . Jul / 8. October  1849 greg. In Irkutsk , † 2 November 1933 in Nice ) was a Russian patron and explorer.

Life

Sibiryakov grew up in Siberia, where his father was a mine owner. After studying in Zurich , he returned to his homeland to build chemical factories, but this turned out to be not worthwhile. When he heard in 1875 that the Swede Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld was planning a trip to the Yenisei , he gave him 25,000 rubles. For Nordenskiöld's later expedition with the ship Vega , Sibiryakov took over a third of the costs, equipping the steamer Lena alone , which followed the Vega to the Lena River . When the fate of the Vega expedition was at times uncertain, Sibiryakov had the ship A. E. Nordenskiöld built, which, however, sank off Japan .

Sibiryakov also tried himself as an explorer by setting out for the Yenisei on the Oscar Dickson ship in 1880 , but missed its mouth and was forced to winter in Gyda Bay to the west. With the help of Samoyed he reached Obdorsk on December 29th of the same year after 70 days of walking . From there he sent an aid expedition to the trapped ship, which however sank the following spring.

Later he also supported several undertakings to study the Siberian traffic routes, such as the exploration of the Chukchi Peninsula and in 1883 a trip to the Angara River . In 1884 he himself investigated the possibility of connecting the Pechora and Ob rivers across the Urals .

His numerous articles on Siberian traffic routes and natural conditions have also been published in German geographical journals.

The Sibirjakow Island in the Kara Sea was named after Alexander Sibiryakov . In 1932, the Soviet icebreaker Alexander Sibiryakov made the first north-eastern passage without wintering.
