Alexander Serafimovich ( Russian Александр Серафимович ; born January 7, jul. / 19th January  1863 greg. As Alexander Serafimovich Popov Russian Александр Серафимович Попов in Nischnekurmojarskaja in the Don region , † 19th January 1949 in Moscow ) was a Russian-Soviet writers and representatives of the socialist realism .

Life

In the years from 1874 to 1883 he graduated from the high school in Stanitsa Ust-Medveditskaya , later Serafimowitsch . He then attended the physical-mathematical faculty of the University of Saint Petersburg . Here he also had contact with Alexander Ulyanov , Lenin's older brother . For one of him after the Ulyanov attack on Tsar Alexander III. He was arrested and exiled for three years to Pinega in the Arkhangelsk governorate . While in exile, he wrote his first story, Auf der Eisscholle , in which he described the life of sealers on the White Sea . The novellas Snow Desert and On the Rafts followed . In 1890 he was allowed to return to his homeland, where he was under police supervision. He was a writer for the newspapers Priasowski Krai and Donskaja Retsch . His work mainly dealt with the living conditions of the workers.

In 1901 an anthology of his stories was published. In 1910 he completed the novel A City in the Steppe . During the October Revolution he sided with the Bolsheviks . As a correspondent for Pravda, he reported on the civil war fronts. Lenin expressed his appreciation to Serafimovich in a personal letter.

His best-known novel The Iron Stream ("Schelesnyj potok") was written in 1924. In Germany, the novel was burned by the National Socialists in 1933 during the book burnings . In the Soviet Union Serafimowitsch was awarded the Order of Lenin and in 1943 the Stalin Prize , and the city of Serafimowitsch was named after him. He died in Moscow on his 86th birthday; his grave is in the Novodevichy Cemetery .
