Alexander Ziegler (writer, 1822)
Alexander Ziegler (born January 20, 1822 in Ruhla , † April 8, 1887 in Wiesbaden ) was a German travel writer, world traveler, Rennsteig hiker , economist and councilor.
Life
Alexander Ziegler was born as the son of an entrepreneur in Ruhla. After graduating from high school in Eisenach, Ziegler studied in Jena , but without completing his studies. During this time he acquired language skills in English, French and Spanish.
As the son of wealthy parents, Ziegler began traveling at an early age. He made his first overseas trip in 1846, visiting New York City , Boston and North America. Further trips went to Spain , Constantinople , Madeira , Anatolia , Jordan and Lesbos , among others . Following his travels, Ziegler published well-founded travel reports in several volumes, with cultural, economic, historical and geographical facts.
Ziegler died in 1887 during a spa stay in Wiesbaden.
Act
In his hometown of Ruhla, Ziegler promoted other personalities, especially the poet Ludwig Storch .
Ziegler supported public libraries and influenced the intellectual climate and level of his homeland. He also had an affinity for gymnastics, in 1848 he was a co-founder of the Ruhla gymnastics club and had a gymnastics area built for the club at his own expense. Furthermore, Alexander Ziegler was the initiator of the construction of the Carl Alexander Tower in Ruhla.
Karl May used Ziegler's works as a source of information for his novels during his imprisonment.
