Alexander von Gerschau ( Russian : Александр Петрович Гершау; May 7, 1825 in Saint Petersburg ; † February 1, 1904 ibid) came from the Duchy of Courland and Zemgale , he was an artillery general in the Imperial Russian Army and a privy councilor in the Russian Empire .

Life

After his initial training in the Imperial Russian Page Corps , he joined the Imperial Russian Army in 1843 as a lieutenant . In 1863 he was in action with the imperial troops in Poland , where he distinguished himself through particular bravery and was awarded the Golden Sword for bravery . With his promotion to colonel in 1864, he was simultaneously commander of the Mounted Artillery - Regiment . In 1865 he was promoted to major general and from 1867 belonged to the imperial suite . His promotion to lieutenant general takes place in 1873, in 1875 he took over the command over the 3rd Cavalry - Division . He was finally promoted to General of Artillery in 1886. In 1893 he was appointed a privy councilor and headed an auxiliary foundation established by Tsarina Maria .

Origin and family

Alexander Petrowitsch von Gerschau is a scion of the Courland noble family von Gerschau . His grandfather was the Duke of Courland and Semigallion Peter von Biron (1724–1800). His father was his illegitimate son Peter von Gerschau (1779-1852), who was married to Karoline Henriette Schmidt (1784-1848). Alexander Petrovich married Julie Sinelnikow (around 1828–1882), they had a daughter.
