Alexei Kowjasin started biathlon at the age of twelve. He attended the School of the Olympic Reserve in Sverdlovsk , after which he studied at the State Academy of Geology and Mining . At the time of the Soviet Union, Kovyazin competed on skis and was a Soviet champion, only later did he turn to summer biathlon. He first took part in a major international event as part of the 2000 Summer Biathlon World Championships in Khanty-Mansiysk . As fourth place in the sprint, he just missed a first medal, which he then won in the pursuit race in third place behind Dmitri Nikiforow and Indrek Tobreluts . In the relay race he won the gold medal on the side of Andrei Prokunin , Nikiforow and Sergei Proswirnin . Three years later in Forni Avoltri , the Russian won the silver medal in the sprint behind Oleksandr Bilanenko , in the pursuit he was able to improve to first place and win his first individual title. In the relay race, Kowjasin with Oleg Rudenko , Alexei Tscheparjow and Timur Nurmejew came second behind the relay of Ukraine. Without a medal he stayed at the world championships in Ufa in 2006 , in the sprint Kowjasin was sixth, in the pursuit race fifth. In the same year he was able to win all three possible titles in sprint, mass start and together with Yevgenia Mikhailova , Nadeschda Starik and Anatoli Karpov in the mixed relay competition at the 2006 Summer Biathlon Championships in Cēsis . In 2007 he won again the title in the mass start competition in Tysovets and was also a member of the Russian relay, which so far was the only one that could not win the title at the European Championships, but instead came second behind the Ukraine. Kovyazin lives in the closed city of Novouralsk , is married and has had a daughter since 2002.
