Alexis Hollaender

Alexis Hollaender (born February 25, 1840 in Ratibor , Upper Silesia , † February 5, 1924 in Berlin ) was a German pianist and music teacher of Silesian origin.

Life

Hollaender came from a musical family: his father was a music teacher and his mother was a pianist; his younger sister Alma Haas is a pianist and music teacher.

As a student of the Conservatory of Wroclaw Hollaender was u. a. Student of Carl Schnabel (piano) and Adolf Friedrich Hesse (organ). 1858 supports him Frankl'sche Foundation with a generous stipend and with this Hollaender could go to Berlin and at the University of Philosophy to study. At the same time he also became a student of the Sing Academy ; u. a. his teachers there were Eduard Grell (composition) and August Wilhelm Bach (music theory). In addition, Hollaender also took private lessons from chamber musician Karl Böhmer .

1861 was entrusted Hollaender with the management of choral and piano class at the New Academy of Music of Theodor Kullak . Two years later, he also took over the management of the concert association , which was officially renamed the Alexis Hollaender Association after its restructuring . Also with the help of Hollander, his association merged with the local Cäcilienverein in 1870 and was managed by him alone until 1902.

In 1865 Hollaender married the singer and singing teacher Anna Becky in Berlin.

In 1875 Hollaender was given the title of Königl by the German Kaiser Wilhelm I. Honored Music Director . Between 1877 and 1920 Hollaender worked as a singing teacher at the Berlin Victoria School. On the occasion of his 48th birthday he was honored with the title of Professor . In 1903 he also took on a teaching position at the University of Berlin. As such, he was entrusted with the inspection of music lessons at the girls' schools in the Mark Brandenburg region.

Hollaender also contributed to the Neue Berliner Musikzeitung , where he discussed Berlin choir concerts in particular.

As a composer Hollaender was overshadowed by Robert Schumann , but as a choir conductor his work was very commendable. Under his leadership were u. a. In 1872 “ A German Requiem ” ( Johannes Brahms ), 1873 “ Christ Oratorio ” ( Franz Liszt ), 1874 “Odysseus Oratorio” ( Max Bruch ) and 1875 “ Semele ” ( Georg Friedrich Handel ) performed.
