Alfons Gabriel

Alfons Gabriel (born February 4, 1894 in Beraun , † May 28, 1976 [or 1974 or 1975] in Vienna ) was an Austrian tropical medicine specialist and explorer .

Life

Gabriel studied medicine at the Universities of Groningen and Vienna and received his doctorate in 1920. He attended the tropical school in Batavia on Java and worked from 1922 to 1932 as a doctor in the West Indies (on Curaçao and Bonaire ), on the Malay Archipelago and in the Republic of China .

In three expeditions in 1927/28, 1933 and 1937 Gabriel explored the deserts of Iran and Afghanistan ( Lut and Kavir ) with his wife Agnes . The two were the first Europeans to cross the Lut desert. He has written widely acclaimed works about it, the most famous of which, Through Persia's Deserts (1935), has even been translated into Persian .

From 1934 Gabriel worked as a country doctor in several communities in Austria. From 1945 to 1959 he was an honorary lecturer and later professor for tropical hygiene at the University of World Trade . In addition, he continued to work as a doctor in Leobendorf and took part in development projects, v. a. on Bonaire , part.
