Alfonso Lovo Cordero (1972)

Alfonso Lovo Cordero (born June 11, 1927 in Danlí , El Paraíso Department , Honduras ; † May 10, 2018 ) was Minister of Agriculture in Nicaragua from 1967 to 1972 and a member of the Junta Nacional de Gobierno from 1972 to 1974 .

Life

Alfonso Lovo Cordero was born in Honduras. This is where his mother, Esperanza Cordero Núñez, fled after the troops of General Augusto César Sandino advanced against the garrison of the Guardia Nacional de Nicaragua in their home town of Ocotal (see the " Battle of Ocotal "). He came from a family that had produced several officers and politicians, including his uncle José María Moncada Tapia , President of Nicaragua from 1929 to 1932.

Lovo studied at Cornell University in the USA and law at the University of León , where he received his doctorate with a dissertation on social security. However, he never worked as a lawyer, but became an importer for cars and tractors. This lucrative business fell to him after he had joined the Partido Liberal Nacionalista ; since 1956 he was a confidante of the Somoza clan .

In 1967 Anastasio Somoza Debayle made him his Minister of Agriculture. Since the constitution did not allow a re-election of Somoza, he formally gave up power on May 1, 1972 and formed a Junta Nacional de Gobierno , a triumvirate consisting of Roberto Martínez Lacayo , Fernando Bernabé Agüero Rocha and Alfonso Lovo Cordero. Under the guise of the junta, the Somoza clan could effectively continue to rule. On December 1, 1974 Somoza took over the presidency again. Lovo was retired and amply rewarded for the services rendered.

When the Sandinista overthrew Somoza in 1979, Lovo followed him into exile, going first to New Orleans , then to Miami . There he founded ALCOR International Consultants in 1980 , which was active in the agricultural and pharmaceutical business. It was later taken over by the peptide manufacturer Demegen, Inc. and Lovo was appointed director by Demegen in 1992.

In 2001 the son of Alfonso Lovo Cordero, Alfonso Lovo Blandón, sued for the clearance of a baseball field that was allegedly owned by his family.
