Alfred Buß (born April 6, 1947 in Bühren , East Frisia ) is a German Protestant theologian and was President of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia from 2004 to 2012, based in Bielefeld .

education

Alfred Buß grew up on a farm. After attending school in Leer (East Friesland) , he moved to Espelkamp , where he became the student representative at the Söderblom-Gymnasium and graduated from high school in 1967. He then began studying theology, which took him to the Bethel Church University and the University of Tübingen . In Tübingen he passed the first theological exam. From 1973 to 1975 Buß was director of studies at the Evangelical Study Center in Villigst and from 1974 part-time vicar in Hennen . He passed the second theological exam in 1975 in Bielefeld.

vocation

From 1975 to 1988 Buß was pastor of the Ev. Paul Gerhardt parish in Unna-Königsborn ; then he took over the development of the "regional office of the Westphalian church for the Kirchentag in the Ruhr area 1991" (RAST). In 1992 Buß was a vocational school pastor in the Unna church district ; In 1994 he became superintendent of this church district. In 2004, Alfred Buß was elected President of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia as the successor to Manfred Sorg and was thus the leading clergyman of this regional church, which corresponds to the office of bishop in other regional churches. As president he was also the chairman of the synod and the regional church office. On March 4, 2012, he handed this office over to his successor, Annette Kurschus . Buß is the sponsor of the Bethel Children's Hospice in Bielefeld for terminally ill children.

Alfred Buß is married to Christa, geb. Gardener, from Hille-Neuenbaum . He has three children.

Awards

On June 23, 2009 Buß was awarded an honorary doctorate by the Evangelical Theological Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster . The background to the award is his services to an open dialogue between the Evangelical Church and the educational institutions in Westphalia as well as in particular the initiation of the Evangelical University Day in 2007 in Münster.

Alfred Buß advocated the church's future shopping project : "In a time of overlapping crises, it is important that the churches in Germany jointly identify ways for sustainable consumption and lead in an exemplary manner."

Acting today

Alfred Buß is the chairman of the North Rhine-Westphalia Environment and Development Foundation . He is the spokesman for the program Das Wort zum Sonntag on ARD .
