Alfred Götze (philologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alfred August Woldemar Götze (born May 17, 1876 in Leipzig , † November 27, 1946 in Gießen ) was a German philologist and Germanist . His research concentrated on German verbal studies , the literature of the Reformation period, and ethnological issues (e.g. field names and special languages).

Life

Götze studied German at the University of Leipzig and received his doctorate in 1899 on the history of adjectives in -ish .

He then taught at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , and from 1925 at the University of Gießen .

In the first years of National Socialism he turned against an exaggerated linguistic purism by defending the foreign word use of the National Socialist regime, which was often criticized as excessive: the foreign word use of "our patriotic movement" should be exempted from language purification because it arises from "well-considered statesmanlike intention". Together with his colleague from Giessen, Hans L. Stoltenberg, he propagated foreign language purism on a technical terminological level and called for the use of "language advisors at every university" to enforce it.

In 1933 Alfred Götze joined the National Socialist Teachers' Association , in 1937 he became a member of the NSDAP . In addition, Götze was a supporting member of the SS .

According to Adolf Bach's report , Götze had a stroke when his institute library was removed in 1946 after the University of Giessen was closed.

From 1930 Götze edited the new editions of Friedrich Kluge's standard work Etymological Dictionary of the German Language . From the 11th edition in 1934 to the 16th edition in 1953 he is named as a co-author.

From 1939, Götze published Trübner's German dictionary on behalf of the Working Group for German Word Research , the largest dictionary project during the Nazi era. The project, which was initially discontinued in 1943 after the publication of 4 volumes, was continued from 1954 to 1957 with further 4 volumes by Walther Mitzka .

Götze also contributed to the Grimm German Dictionary . He edited the 1st part ("Weh - Wendunmut") of the 1st section of volume 14, published in 1955.
