Alfred Georg Frei

Alfred Georg Frei (* 1954 ) is a German historian and professor of cultural history at the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences .

He wrote many papers and wrote in numerous magazines and book chapters on history didactics and history workshops, cultural history and cultural politics. He has been given teaching assignments by various universities ( Kassel , Darmstadt , Innsbruck , Konstanz , Tübingen , Dresden and Karlsruhe ) and has been invited to give lectures in Germany , the USA , Switzerland , Austria , Japan , Great Britain , Belgium , Ireland and France.

Life

After studying history and political science in Konstanz, Bordeaux and Innsbruck, he worked in 1981 and 1982 as coordinator for the establishment of the museum on the island of Reichenau in Lake Constance. From 1980 to 1985 he wrote as a freelance journalist z. B. for the Badische Zeitung , the Tages-Anzeiger , Die Zeit and the Darmstädter Echo . From 1982 to 1986 he was a research assistant at the Technical University of Darmstadt . In 1986 he received his doctorate from the University of Innsbruck under Anton Pelinka with a thesis on the labor movement and Viennese housing policy 1919–1934.

From 1986 to 1995 Frei was head of the cultural office of the city of Singen (Hohentwiel) . From August 1995 to December 1998 he was director of the state exhibition “1848/49. Revolution of the German Democrats in Baden ”delegated to the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlsruhe.

From January 1999 to September 2000 Frei was cultural coordinator for the city of Singen. Then he taught as a substitute professor for cultural history at the Merseburg University of Applied Sciences. On October 1, 2001, he was appointed professor for cultural history in Merseburg. In 2012 he was visiting professor at the Université Paris Diderot . In 2017 he was a visiting scholar at the City University of New York (CUNY).
