Alfred Ackermann-Teubner
Alfred Gustav Benedictus Ackermann-Teubner (born January 31, 1857 in Leipzig ; † February 18, 1941 ibid) was a German publisher , bookseller and owner of the publishing and printing company BG Teubner in Leipzig.
Life
Alfred Ackermann was the son of the publisher Albin Ackermann and usually called himself without the addition -Teubner, who had been running since 1852 at the request of his father-in-law. He graduated from the Realgymnasium (Petrischule) in Leipzig in 1875 and from 1876–78 attended primarily natural science and economics lectures at the University of Leipzig in addition to professional training with BG Teubner, which he then did with Ballantyne, Hanson & Co. in London and Haar & Steinert in Paris continued.
In 1882 he joined the BG Teubner company in Leipzig as a co-owner. There he initially devoted himself to printing and later moved on to the publishing house, where he particularly turned to mathematics, technical and natural sciences. On June 9, 1885 he married Marie Mathilde de Liagre (1865–1950), daughter of the Commerce Councilor Albert de Liagre (1833–1908).
From 1903 to 1919 he was treasurer of the German Mathematicians Association . He was a member of the Astronomical Society from 1902 to 1941 .
In 1912 he donated the Alfred Ackermann-Teubner Memorial Prize named after him at the University of Leipzig to promote the mathematical sciences.
Since 1903 he was the owner of the Gundorf manor near Leipzig. His initials "AA" still adorn the wrought iron gate on Leipziger Strasse and the large double doors at the main entrance of the palace.
In previous years he held various professional honorary positions. On the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the University of Greifswald (1906), the philosophy faculty there appointed him for services that he had acquired as a publisher in the mathematical sciences. phil. honoris causa.
From 1916 he withdrew from the business at BG Teubner. The publisher and bookseller Erich Ackermann was his son.
