Alfred Kohler (historian)

Alfred Kohler (born August 6, 1943 in Vienna ) is an Austrian historian and university professor of modern history at the University of Vienna .

Life

Kohler studied history and geography at the University of Vienna. In 1967 he received his doctorate. Since 1969 he has been university assistant to Heinrich Lutz at the Institute for History at the University of Vienna. In 1980 he completed his habilitation on the subject of anti-Habsburg politics in the era of Charles V: the imperial class opposition to the election of Ferdinand I as Roman king and against the recognition of his kingship (1524–1534). Since 1992 Kohler was Professor of Modern History at the University of Vienna. From 2004 to 2006 Kohler was Dean of the Faculty of History and Cultural Studies at the University of Vienna.

Kohler is a corresponding member of the philosophical-historical class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Awards (selection)

In 2010 Kohler was awarded the Wilhelm Hartel Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In 2012 he received an appreciation award from the Cardinal Innitzer Prize .
