Alfred Orda

Alfred Orda-Wdowczak (born July 9, 1915 in Łódź , † February 24, 2004 in London ) was a Polish opera singer ( baritone ).

Life

Orda had her first singing lessons with Adela Comte-Wilgocka at the Conservatory of Lodz when she was nineteen . He then continued his training at the Warsaw Conservatory with Adela Wilgocka and Gregori Orloff and went to Milan in 1936 to study with Alfredo Cecchi , a pupil of Antonio Cotogni . When the Second World War broke out, he went to Rome, where he took lessons from Mario Cotogni .

When he had to leave Italy, he traveled to England via France and made his debut there in 1941 as a soloist with the Scottish Orchestra under the direction of Warwick Braithwaite . In 1942 he made his debut as an opera singer as Valentin in Charles Gounod's Faust , then Henry Wood engaged him for the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall . In 1944 he traveled to North America and performed there in Montreal, New York ( Carnegie Hall , Metropolitan Opera ), Chicago, Philadelphia, Buffalo and Detroit.

In 1949 Orda returned to Europe and in 1953 became a member of Sadler's Wells Opera Company . Until he left for health reasons in 1957, he sang Alfio in Cavalleria rusticana , Peter in Hansel and Gretel , Zurga in Les pêcheurs de perles , the title role in Rigoletto , Michele in Il tabarro , Escalus in Romeo and Juliet by Heinrich Sutermeister and Escamillo in Carmen . 1954–55 he appeared at the Liceo in Barcelona as Fjodor Pojarok in Rimski-Korsakov's Die Legende von der Invisibischen Stadt Kitesch und von der Jungfrau Fewronija , at the BBC he gave a studio concert with Joan Sutherland with songs by Hugo Wolf , and at the Proms he participated with roles from Russian operas.

From 1957 Orda appeared increasingly as a concert singer. He has recorded less well-known opera arias from Gaetano Donizetti's Torquato Tasso and Maria Padilla as well as compositions by Anton Bruckner , Karol Szymanowski and Dmitri Kabalewski for the BBC and has made regular concert tours through Poland. There he came into contact with composers such as Jerzy Lefeld , Kazimierz Serocki , Karol Mroszczyk , Tomasz Kiesewetter and Henryk Czyż , who wrote works for him.
