Alfred Rudolfowitsch Eberling Russian Альфред Рудольфович Эберлинг (born January 3, 1872 in Zgierz , Poland ; † January 17, 1951 in Leningrad ) was a Russian and Soviet painter .

Eberling studied at the Petersburg Academy from 1889 to 1897 . From 1896 to 1897 he was a student of Ilya Eefimowitsch Repin . Then he became a student of Franz von Lenbach in Munich .

Eberling initially created large compositions close to symbolism , but concentrated on portraits from an early age. As such, he worked several times for Tsars Nicholas II (Russia) and Ferdinand I (Bulgaria) . He also became known for portraits of ballerinas (including Anna Pawlowna Pawlowa ) and actresses. After the October Revolution he also became a portraitist of the new rulers. Among other things, he portrayed Josef Stalin , Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Molotov , Maxim Gorky and Lenin . His portrait of Lenin won a competition for the best portrait of Lenin in 1924 and then appeared on ruble banknotes . From 1904 until his death he taught at art schools and the academy in Leningrad. He also created the illustrations for a luxury edition of Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov's poem “The Demon” from 1910.
