Alfred Seeger (born August 31, 1927 in Stuttgart ; † October 18, 2015 ) was a German solid-state physicist . Seeger was a professor at the University of Stuttgart and director at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research in Stuttgart.

Life

In 1943 Seeger was deployed as an air force helper in World War II , which was followed by labor service and service in the Wehrmacht .

Seeger studied (after Notabitur ) from 1946 to 1949 Physics at the former Technical University of Stuttgart . In 1951 he was at the age of 23 years with the dissertation to lattice theory of dislocation doctorate . He then did research as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Bristol, among others with the later Nobel Prize winner Nevill Francis Mott , one of the pioneers of solid-state physics. Seeger completed his habilitation in physics again in 1954 at the TH Stuttgart with the thesis dislocations and crystal plasticity and then worked at the University of Cambridge . In 1959 he was appointed to a newly created chair for solid state physics at the TH Stuttgart and in 1965 he was appointed Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society and Director at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research , where he worked until his retirement in 1995.

His scientific work areas ranged from the theory of atomic defects and the theory of dislocations to low-temperature physics and superconductivity and the production of high-purity metals. He also discovered the solitonic properties of partial nonlinear differential equations.

Seeger's work comprises around 650 scientific publications. Around 180 doctorates and 200 diploma theses were written in his working group. Ulrich Gösele was one of his students . “Through numerous pioneering work in the field of metal and solid-state physics, Seeger has significantly influenced the development of these areas (...) over more than four decades. (...) In the large area of solid-state physics, there is hardly an area to which Alfred Seeger does not owe valuable suggestions and contributions, "writes Helmut Kronmüller in his obituary for Seeger.

In October 2016, a memorial colloquium took place at his long-standing place of activity, today's MPI for Intelligent Systems in Stuttgart.
