Alhard von Drach

Carl Alhard von Drach (born June 23, 1839 in Hanau ; † April 30, 1915 in Kassel ) was a German mathematician , university professor and monument conservator .

Life

Alhard von Drach came from a Hessian officer family. He completed his mathematics studies at the Philipps University of Marburg in 1861 with a dissertation “From the tangent cone of the second order surfaces”. In 1864 he completed his habilitation here with a thesis “On inner and outer polars of the third order curves” appointed associate professor of mathematics. From 1892 to 1893 he studied art history at the University of Berlin, afterwards he founded the chair for art history at the University of Marburg, where he taught the subject of Middle and Modern Art History. From 1899 to 1909 he also headed the collection for modern art history. His scientific interest was primarily in the arts and crafts of the Renaissance, including the work of Antonius Eisenhoit .

On February 10, 1902, Alhard von Drach was appointed as the successor to Ludwig Bickell as curator of the monuments in the Kassel administrative region, and in 1908 he was appointed to the Privy Councilor. For the inventory of “Architectural and Art Monuments in the Administrative Region of Cassel” established in 1901 by Ludwig Bickell , he wrote the volume “District Fritzlar” (1909). In 1909 he was released from his duties at the University of Marburg, and on October 1, 1913, he also resigned from his position as district curator. His successor in this function was Alois Holtmeyer .
