Antonius Eisenhoit (also Eisenhoit von Warburg , * 1553/1554 in Warburg -Altstadt in the Principality of Paderborn , † autumn 1603 in Warburg) was a German goldsmith , silversmith, copper engraver and draftsman.

Life

After years of apprenticeship and traveling and a stay of several years in Rome, where he worked for a member of the papal curia , he returned to Warburg. There he made works of art for twenty years, mostly commissioned work such as for the Metallotheca Vaticana by Michele Mercati . He was also known as the German Benvenuto Cellini .

Occasionally he seems to have signed works as Anton Eisen .

Honors

  • In 1912, the sculptor Franz Heise erected a memorial with a fountain on the Warburg Neustadtmarkt, showing him sitting down during a break from work.
  • The former "Eisenhoitschule" in Warburg, a special school with a special focus on learning, was named after him.

In the copper engraving Haeresis Dea carried out as evidence, however, the signature Primitiae artis Antonii Eisen / hoit is clearly shown . It must therefore be an error on the part of the author.
