Geographical location

Allendorf is located northwest of the Knüllgebirge in the Landsburger Grund , on a hill just under 4.5 km north-northeast of the center of Treysa , the capital of Schwalmstadt. To the north of the village, directly east of the Schwalm , beyond the confluence of the Gers and Schwalm, is the basalt cone Gerstenberg , on which the Landsburg stood. The Main-Weser Railway runs on the western edge of the town .

Allendorf consists of two town centers that have grown together over the centuries. The northern and larger core is formed around the church, the center of the southern and smaller town center is formed by a courtyard.

history

The place was first mentioned in a document in 1197. On the nearby Gerstenberg, Count Johann I von Ziegenhain built a fortress , the Landsburg, in 1343 . It served as protection against Jesberg Castle in Mainz . The Gerstenberg was already settled in the Celtic times when there was a refuge there .

The Landsburg and Allendorf changed hands several times after 1450, the end of the County of Ziegenhain , before they finally became part of the Landgraviate of Hesse again in 1544 . However, after disputes, the castle fell into disrepair in the same century. In the Thirty Years War , Allendorf was devastated, as was the neighboring village of Michelsberg .

On December 31, 1971, the place was incorporated into the city of Schwalmstadt as part of the Hessian regional reform .
