Michelsberg is a district of Schwalmstadt in the north Hessian Schwalm-Eder district .
geography
The place is about seven kilometers north of Treysa or Ziegenhain and about 18 kilometers southwest of Homberg (Efze) and about 15 kilometers south of Borken . It is about 220 m above sea level. NN (at the church) at the foot of his "local mountain" Landsburg in a small side valley of the Gers, a right tributary of the nearby Schwalm .
history
Michelsberg was first mentioned in a document from the Immichenhain monastery in 1256 . The village church was originally a Romanesque hall building and was therefore probably built in the middle of the 12th century. It is one of the oldest churches in the area. It can therefore be assumed that the village is a lot older. On the nearby Gerstenberg, Count Johann I von Ziegenhain built a fortress , the Landsburg, in 1343 . It served as protection against Jesberg Castle in Mainz . The Gerstenberg was already settled in the Celtic times when there was a refuge there .
The Landsburg changed hands several times after 1450, the end of the County of Ziegenhain , before finally becoming part of the Landgraviate of Hesse again in 1544 . However, after disputes, the castle fell into disrepair in the same century. But she still gives her name to the former Gerstenberg today. Today the Landsburg belongs to the district of Michelsberg.
During the Thirty Years' War Michelsberg suffered great destruction, many houses were destroyed and the number of villagers was greatly decimated. The village was only able to recover slowly from this severe blow.
Michelsberg gained importance very early on through his pottery and brick production, which can be traced back to the abundant clay deposits in the vicinity. At the height of this craft, almost 70 percent of the population lived from this branch of business. The last pottery kiln closed in 1905.
Another Michelsberg treasure trove, the basalt rock of the Landsburg, took over the function of an important source of income for the place in the course of the 20th century. To this day, Michelsberg basalt is a well-known term both on construction sites and in modern art.
On August 1, 1972, Michelsberg lost its political independence in the course of the municipal reform and was incorporated into the town of Schwalmstadt. At the beginning of the 1990s, Michelsberg was included in the village renewal program, as a result of which some major structural changes were made in the village.
In 2006, the 750th anniversary celebrations, the biggest event in recent years, took place in Michelsberg.
