Everything for my father is a German - Israeli drama by Dror Zahavi from 2008.

action

Tarek, an Arab from the Palestinian town of Tulkarm , was a promising football talent who played for a club based in Nazareth , Israel . His father supported his career unconditionally. When the threat of terrorist attacks tightened the controls and the trips to Nazareth for training became more and more risky, he obtained permits from the Israelis, but they asked for information. This brought him into disrepute with the local militant Palestinian group Tanzim.

In order to save his father's honor, the disaffected Tarek decides to act as a suicide bomber in Tel Aviv for the Tanzim . It is equipped with an explosive vest with a fragmentation bomb and a remote ignition mechanism for emergencies. He can no longer take off the vest without causing it to explode. When Tarek tries to detonate the bomb on the market square in Tel Aviv, however, the switch on the ignition mechanism is defective.

In a side street he discovers the Jewish Katz's electrical shop, from which he orders a new switch because it is not in stock. Since Friday is the Sabbath and the next day , he has to wait until eight o'clock on Sunday morning. He gets time from his clients until then, otherwise the bomb is detonated remotely. He meets the pretty kiosk owner Keren, who is a rebellious Jew and therefore has problems with Jewish extremists. Tarek feels increasingly comfortable with Katz and his wife and realizes that other people had to endure a lot of suffering in their lives too. Tarek and Keren fall in love with each other, whereby Tarek is very distant and because of the explosive vest underneath his clothes he refrains from any physical contact.

After a romantic night with Keren on the beach, Tarek (now with the repaired ignition mechanism) makes his way to the market square. There he meets Katz, who suspects what Tarek is up to and persuades him to go with him and not carry out his plan. But Tarek is shot by the security forces, the vest is hit by a bullet and explodes. No other people were killed, however, as Tarek removed the nails from the bomb on the beach. Shortly before, Keren wakes up on the beach, discovers the nails in the sand, a nail bent into a ring on her finger and hears the shots. Sadly, she opens her kiosk.

criticism

“The drama, which aims at a fairytale realism, illuminates less the problems of the Palestine conflict or the psyche of a suicide bomber than it illuminates an Israeli microcosm. The film remains pale and lifeless, also because of the overwhelmed leading actors. "

“A man should sacrifice his life - and fall in love with it. The ARD film Everything for my father tells of a Palestinian who meets the love of his life on the way to a suicide bombing. A touchingly beautiful story that gives terror a human face. The cinema showing in front of young people from Hamburg caused dismay, they were mostly silent. Once there was an outburst of happiness: When Tarek gets on his bike with Keren and both of them cycle to the beach. Two just drive away from madness for a brief moment. Youthful illusion, youthful hope. Just once, not everything for the fathers. "
