occupation

Everything is Enlightened is a 2005 American film . It is based on the novel of the same name by Jonathan Safran Foer .

action

The American Jew Jonathan is a collector with all his soul. Everything that is dear to him comes in small plastic bags in his well-stocked collection. With the death of his grandmother, he receives a photo of his grandfather with a woman he does not know. Jonathan assumes that this woman had a relationship with his grandfather. On the back of the photograph you can find the note “Trachimbrod 1940”.

He decides to go to Ukraine to look for the village of Trachimbrod . There he hopes to find the woman in the picture. In order to be well prepared for the trip to the foreign country, Jonathan hires a team of helpers from the Jewish Heritage Tours . This turns out to be a duo of an allegedly blind grandfather, who nevertheless drives a very good car, and his grandson Alex. He should serve Jonathan as interpreter and turns out to be very creative in dealing with the English language. Jonathan hadn't expected this situation, but he started looking anyway. That turns out to be difficult, as the place was burned down by the Wehrmacht during the Second World War and has not been shown on any map since then.

criticism

The film-dienst (25/2005) called Alles is enlightened as a "[g] great novel adaptation". The result was an "intelligently and absurdly narrated road movie" that "smooths out the narrative structure of the complex original", "but exemplifies the tension in the encounter between cultures through comic situations and pointed dialogues".
