Almon Heath Read

Almon Heath Read (born June 12, 1790 in Shelburne , Vermont , †  June 3, 1844 in Montrose , Pennsylvania ) was an American politician . Between 1842 and 1844 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Almon Read attended Williams College in Williamstown ( Massachusetts ) until 1811 . Between 1815 and 1820 he was employed as a county clerk in the county government in Susquehanna County , Pennsylvania. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1816, he began to work in Montrose in this profession. In the 1820s he joined the movement around the future US President Andrew Jackson and became a member of the Democratic Party founded by this in 1828 . From 1827 to 1832 Read was a member of the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania ; from 1833 to 1837 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1840 he was State Treasurer of Pennsylvania.

After the death of MP Davis Dimock , Read was elected as his successor to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he took up his new mandate on March 18, 1842. After being re-elected, he could remain in Congress until his death on June 3, 1844 . This period was marked by tension between President John Tyler and the Whigs . In addition, a possible annexation of the Republic of Texas , which has been independent of Mexico since 1836, was already being discussed.
