description
Vegetative characteristics
Aloe bowiea grows without a trunk and forms dense groups when it sprouts . The 18 to 25 linear, lightly glaucoma to green leaves sit together in rosettes or are arranged in several rows. The leaf blade is 10 to 15 inches long and 1.5 inches wide. There are white spots on the leaf surface, which are more numerous on the underside of the leaf. The leaf margins are covered with very small, soft, white teeth.
Inflorescences and flowers
The simple racemose inflorescence reaches a height of about 45 centimeters. The loose, cylindrical flower clusters are about 15 centimeters long. The flower stalks have a length of 1 to 2 millimeters. The greenish white, club-shaped flowers are 8 to 15 millimeters long, narrowed briefly at the base and expanded above the ovary . The outer tepals are not fused together to their base. The stamens and the stylus protrude 6 to 8 millimeters from the flower envelope.
Systematics and distribution
Aloe bowiea is common in thickets in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.
The first description was made in 1829 by Joseph August Schultes and his son Julius Hermann Schultes . Synonyms are Bowiea africana Haw. (1824) and Chamaealoe africana A.Berger (1905).
