Aloe citrea is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet citrea comes from Latin , means 'lemon-like' and refers to the lemon-yellow flowers of the species.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe citrea grows without a trunk. The approximately 16 lanceolate tapering leaves , often twisted towards the tip, form dense rosettes . The dark green leaf blade is up to 28 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. The green teeth on the leaf margin are 3 millimeters long and 1 to 2 millimeters apart.

Inflorescences and flowers

The simple inflorescence reaches a length of 15 centimeters. The dense, cylindrical grapes are 6 inches long and consist of about 25 flowers. The triangular bracts have a length of less than 5 millimeters. The lemon yellow flowers have green central ribs and are 6 to 8 millimeter long peduncles . The flowers are 25 millimeters long. Above the ovary , the flowers are slightly narrowed and finally slightly expanded towards the mouth. Your outer tepals are not fused together over a length of about 5 millimeters. The stamens and the stylus barely protrude from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe citrea is widespread in the east of Madagascar in humus pockets on gneiss rock deposits at altitudes of 900 to 1200 meters.

The first description as Lomatophyllum citreum by André Guillaumin was published in 1944. Leonard Eric Newton and Gordon Douglas Rowley put the species in 1996 in the genus Aloe .
