Aloe massawana is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodilla family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet massawana refers to the assumed occurrence of the species near Massawa in Eritrea.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe massawana grows without a trunk or with a short trunk, sprouts from the base and forms dense clumps of up to 3 meters in diameter. The approximately 16 lanceolate narrowed leaves form dense rosettes . The cloudy green leaf blade is about 50 centimeters long and 10 centimeters wide. Occasionally there are few white spots near its base. The white, reddish brown tipped, soft to firm teeth on the leaf margin are 2 to 3 millimeters long and 15 to 25 millimeters apart. At the base of the leaf, they are smaller and closer together. The leaf sap is dry yellow.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence consists of two to three branches and reaches a length of 120 to 150 centimeters. The rather dense, cylindrically pointed grapes are 15 to 20 centimeters long and 5 centimeters wide. The ovoid-deltoid bracts have a length of 7 millimeters and are 3 millimeters wide. The bright scarlet flowers are on 6 millimeter long peduncles . They are 30 to 32 millimeters long and rounded at their base. At the level of the ovary , the flowers have a diameter of 7 millimeters, above they are slightly narrowed and slightly widened towards their mouth. Your tepals are not fused together over a length of 12 millimeters. The stamens and the stylus barely protrude from the flower.

Systematics, distribution and endangerment

Aloe massawana is common near the coast from Mozambique to Kenya on sandy soils in grass or open thickets.

The first description by Gilbert Westacott Reynolds was published in 1959. Aloe kirkii Baker (1894) is a synonym .

Aloe massawana is in the endangered Red List species the IUCN as " Vulnerable (VU) ", d. H. classified endangered.
