description

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe plicatilis grows trunk-forming and branches dichotomously from far below on the trunk. The upright trunks reach a length of up to 5 meters and have an atypical growth in thickness . The approximately twelve to 16 linear to ribbon-shaped leaves are arranged in two rows on the branches. Their cloudy green to glaucous green leaf blade is 30 centimeters long and 4 centimeters wide. The leaf surface is smooth. In the upper third of the leaf margin there are tiny teeth or they are occasionally almost absent.

Inflorescences and flowers

The simple inflorescence reaches a length of up to 50 centimeters. The loose, cylindrical and slightly pointed grapes are 15 to 25 centimeters long. They consist of 25 to 30 flowers. The ovoid-deltoid bracts have a length of 6 to 8 millimeters. The cylindrical, scarlet flowers are on 10 millimeter long peduncles . The flowers are up to 55 millimeters long and rounded at their base. Above the ovary , the flowers are not narrowed. Your outer tepals are not fused together over a length of about 18 millimeters. The stamens and the pen stand out 2 to 5 millimeters from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe plicatilis is widespread in the South African province of Western Cape on steep, south-westerly slopes and rocky areas with high rainfall in winter at altitudes of 1000 to 1400 meters.

The first description as Aloe disticha var. Plicatilis by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum was published in 1753. Nicolaas Laurens Burman elevated the variety to the rank of a species in 1768.

Synonyms are Rhipidodendrum plicatile L. (Haw.) (1821), Aloe linguaeformis L.f. (1782), Aloe tripetala Medik. (1783), Aloe lingua Thunb. (1785), Kumara disticha Medik. (1786), Rhipidodendrum distichum (medic.) Willd. (1811), Aloe flabelliformis Salisb. (1796) and Aloe plicatilis var. Major Salm-Dyck (1817).

On the basis of more recent phylogenetic studies, Olwen Megan Grace and colleagues proposed the genus Kumara Medik at the beginning of 2013 . (1786) with the only kind of Kumara disticha to be recognized again.
