Aloe suffulta is a species of aloes in the subfamily of the Affodill family (Asphodeloideae). The specific epithet suffulta comes from Latin , means 'supported' and refers to the weak, slender inflorescence, which is always supported by the surrounding vegetation.

Vegetative characteristics

Aloe suffulta grows easily and in a stem-forming manner. The shoots reach a length of up to 20 centimeters and a diameter of 2 centimeters. The approximately 16 narrowed leaves are scattered along the shoots. The green leaf blade is 40 to 50 inches long and 4 inches wide. There are cloudy white spots on it, which are occasionally scattered, but usually form more or less pronounced transverse bands. The usually hooked, whitish teeth on the leaf margin are 1 to 2 millimeters long and 5 to 10 millimeters apart. The finely striped leaf sheaths are 5 to 10 millimeters long.

Inflorescences and flowers

The inflorescence , supported by bushes, consists of up to nine branches and reaches a length of about 175 centimeters. The loose, cylindrical, slightly pointed grapes are about 8 to 15 centimeters long, 5 centimeters wide and consists of up to 20 flowers. The bracts have a length of 9 millimeters. The light jasper red flowers are whitish at their mouth and stand on 9 millimeter long peduncles . The flowers are 30 to 35 millimeters long and briefly narrowed at their base. At the level of the ovary , the flowers have a diameter of 6 millimeters. Above it they are narrowed to 5.5 millimeters and finally widened to the mouth. Your outer tepals are not fused together over a length of 7 millimeters. The stamens and the style protrude 7 to 8 millimeters from the flower.

Systematics and distribution

Aloe suffulta is widespread in the south of Mozambique , in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal and in the extreme southeast of Zimbabwe on sandy flooded soils at heights of around 90 to 550 meters.

The first description by Gilbert Westacott Reynold was published in 1937. As a synonym was Aloe subfulta hort. (no year, nom. invalid ICBN -Article 61.1) included in the species.
