Born and raised in Bad Buchau in Upper Swabia , he first completed an apprenticeship as a painter and then studied at the Ulm Art School from 1924 to 1929 .

From 1935 he worked as a graphic artist and ran a studio at Rosenstrasse 25 in Ravensburg . The participant in the Second World War was released from captivity in 1946 and has lived in Ravensburg since that time.

Springer used various artistic techniques; His works include oil paintings, watercolors, drawings, woodcuts, monotypes , sgraffito works and glass windows. He often took up religious themes in them or depicted scenes from his homeland. He often performed works with religious motifs ( Women under the Cross , 1955) using screen printing and scraping techniques . The town hall in Buchau was decorated with his work Heidelandschaft .

His works were largely received positively by the public, but there were few sales successes over the years. In 1964 Springer moved to Erlenmoos, the birthplace of his wife Maria. His initially lyrical, dreamy, clayey landscape painting ( Buchauer Moorland , 1950) changed to colorful, cubic motifs during the Erlenmoos period ( houses on the outskirts of Ochsenhausen , 1969). One of his companions and interpreters was the writer Maria Müller-Gögler . In 1971 Springer died in Erlenmoos a few weeks before his 69th birthday.

Kurt Diemer opened the exhibition in the Fruchtkasten Ochsenhausen in 1990 with the words: “Alois Springer has struggledly and creatively developed into an artist whose handwriting is unmistakable and unmistakable, an artist who has validly captured the essence of the Upper Swabian landscape and with his heart . His work will forever belong to the artistic legacy of Upper Swabia. Springer is Upper Swabia through and through. "

Since 2016, part of his estate has been in the north wing of the Obere Tor Rot an der Rot , which was originally built in 1714 for the guards of the Reichsabbey Rot an der Rot .
